A Recipe for Email Personalization in Klaviyo

MOST people think email personalization is just using someone’s first name.

“Hi Lou,”

But that’s not real personalization.

Real personalization is making people feel emotions about themselves.

It’s about connecting with them as an individual.

Using just a first name doesn’t make people feel much.

Real personalization makes people feel:

→ Appreciated

→ Challenged

→ Motivated

→ Grateful

→ Happy

It builds trust.

For example, let’s say you sell things to fashion influencers.

Just saying “Hi Taylor” is not personalized.

But saying “You look great today!” makes them feel seen.

See the difference?

One is just a name. The other makes an emotional connection as an individual.

→ The secret is understanding your customers’ hopes and struggles.

→ Then speak directly to their hearts through emails.

→ Make them feel appreciated and understood.

That’s real email personalization.

Not just names, but emotional connections.

And that’s how you build real trust and loyalty with customers

Once you get to that point, you’re not just building a brand, you’re building a legacy.

But, how do you get there?

First, you’ve got to understand your customers.

Then, you need to segment your customers.

Finally, you need to 1:1 personalize.

Segmentation is the start of personalization, not the end of it.

A recipe for personalization in Klaviyo

It’s smart to leverage user behavior and activity to decide WHO gets what email.

But then you need to personalize WHAT each person sees, even when they are in the same segment.

WHAT each person sees should be personalized down to the individual user.

That is 1:1 personalization, which drives far more revenue than segmentation alone.

Let’s take this strategy and apply it to how you can use Littledata and Grid & Pixel together. Since both apps integrate automatically with Shopify and Klaviyo, it couldn’t be easier to target high-intent customers with personalized images that convert.

Here’s the recipe:

  1. Sell on Shopify and use Klaviyo for your email and SMS marketing.
  1. Set up an abandoned browse flow inside of Klaviyo.
  1. Install Littledata on Shopify App Store and add the Klaviyo connection (free 30-day trial)
  1. Change the trigger to Littledata’s server-side “Viewed Product” event. This will help you retarget users higher up the funnel with email & SMS.
  1. Install Grid & Pixel on the Shopify App Store (free)
  1. Design or customize a hero graphic for the abandoned cart email
  1. Get the Live Embed Code and then paste that into the email that triggers from the Littledata Viewed Product event.
  1. Preview to double-check the email graphics that will be sent to each recipient.

Viola!

Now you will automatically retarget your anonymous site visitors with hyper-personalized emails that entertain with animation and high relevance.

This is the path to creating 1:1 personalized experiences that result in more repeat customers and higher AOV over the long run.

This is how you can turn “Real” Email Personalization into the sturdy backbone of your business.
